Greece Acquires Up to Six Embraer KC-390 Millennium Aircraft
The Hellenic Ministry of National Defense has signed a government-to-government contract via Portugal to acquire three Embraer KC-390 Millennium airlifters with three options.
The Hellenic Ministry of National Defense has formally signed a procurement contract in Athens to acquire three Embraer KC-390 Millennium multi-mission military transport aircraft, with contractual options for an additional three airframes. The landmark transaction was concluded through a government-to-government agreement between Greece and Portugal, enabling the Hellenic Air Force to accelerate its delivery schedule by utilising pre-arranged European production allocations. Under the terms of the agreement, Greece is scheduled to welcome its first KC-390 Millennium in 2027.
Government-to-Government Agreement With Portugal
The government-to-government framework leveraged Portugal's established position as the European launch customer and primary industrial partner for the KC-390 programme. Portugal previously acquired five KC-390 aircraft and has integrated the type into front-line Portuguese Air Force service. By structuring the transaction through bilateral arrangements with Lisbon, the Greek defence procurement agency secured streamlined acquisition terms, established training pipelines, and direct integration into an established European support ecosystem.
Embraer Defense & Security leadership emphasised that the Greek selection validates the twin-turbofan airlifter as an optimal replacement for older tactical transports across allied nations. Bosco Da Costa Junior, President and Chief Executive Officer of Embraer Defense & Security, stated that the decision highlights the expanding confidence placed in the Millennium platform by North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states seeking enhanced operational availability, mission adaptability, and reduced lifecycle operating costs.
Modernising Hellenic Tactical Airlift and Refuelling
For the Hellenic Air Force, the arrival of the KC-390 represents a vital technological leap in medium tactical airlift and aerial refuelling capabilities. Greece has relied heavily for decades on legacy Lockheed C-130B and C-130H Hercules turboprops delivered during the 1970s. In recent years, sustaining aging legacy transports has posed operational and availability challenges due to maintenance requirements and global spare parts shortages.
The KC-390 Millennium introduces modern fly-by-wire flight control architecture, integrated digital avionics, and a maximum payload capacity of 26 metric tonnes. Powered by two International Aero Engines V2500-E5 turbofans, the aircraft cruises at speeds up to Mach 0.80, offering substantially faster deployment times and longer mission radius than legacy turboprop fleets. Equipped with dual hose-and-drogue aerial refuelling pods, the Hellenic KC-390s will provide organic probe-and-drogue tanker support to Greece's growing fleet of Dassault Rafale F3R combat jets and Mirage 2000-5 fighters.
Expanding European NATO Footprint for Embraer
Greece becomes the seventh European nation to select the Millennium platform, joining Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Sweden. This rapid adoption within Central and Southern Europe reflects a coordinated continental shift toward modernising medium-lift military logistics with common tactical platforms.
Beyond Europe, the C-390 Millennium has been ordered or operated by the air forces of Brazil, South Korea, Uzbekistan, the United Arab Emirates, and Colombia. The growing global user community enables member nations to share logistics stockpiles, coordinate pilot simulator syllabi, and pool depot-level maintenance facilities across regional hubs.
Operational Synergies and Delivery Timeline
Hellenic defence planners anticipate significant operational synergies through joint training initiatives with Portugal and Central European operators. With first aircraft delivery scheduled for 2027, initial aircrews and ground maintenance technicians will begin conversion training at Embraer training centres and partnered European facilities.
The aircraft will support a diverse spectrum of national security and humanitarian missions across the Eastern Mediterranean, including heavy cargo transport, paratrooper drops, medical evacuation, aerial firefighting, and maritime surveillance. Exercising the three follow-on options would bring the total Hellenic KC-390 fleet to six aircraft, fully recapitalising Greek medium tactical airlift for several decades.
