Biman Bangladesh Airlines Signs Firm Order for 10 Airbus Jets
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has finalised a firm order for four A350-900 widebodies and six A321neo narrowbodies, marking a historic diversification into Airbus aircraft.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines has officially signed a firm purchase contract with Airbus for 10 commercial aircraft, formalising an agreement that introduces European aircraft into the Bangladeshi flag carrier's frontline fleet. The firm transaction comprises four Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft and six Airbus A321neo single-aisle jets.
The agreement was finalised during a formal signing ceremony held at the Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden in Dhaka. The contract was signed by Biman Chairman Rumee A Hossain and Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus for India and South Asia, alongside senior representatives from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.
Strategic Shift to a Dual-Manufacturer Fleet
The transaction marks a major turning point for Biman, which has operated a mainline passenger fleet dominated almost exclusively by Boeing aircraft for decades. The carrier currently maintains a scheduled passenger fleet comprising Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners, Boeing 737-800 narrowbodies, and regional De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 turboprops.
Introducing Airbus aircraft establishes a mixed-fleet strategy aimed at securing greater pricing leverage, operational flexibility, and production slot diversification. While Biman had earlier agreed to acquire additional Boeing aircraft, the new Airbus commitment ensures that the airline is not reliant on a single airframe manufacturer as global supply chain bottlenecks persist across aerospace production lines.
Network Expansion Across Europe and the Gulf
The new aircraft types are designated for distinct mission profiles within Biman's growing international network. The four A350-900 widebody jets will serve primary long-haul intercontinental corridors connecting Dhaka and Sylhet with major international destinations in Europe, North America, and the Middle East.
High-density routes to key Gulf destinations—including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh, and Jeddah—represent crucial commercial arteries for Biman, carrying millions of expatriate workers, business travellers, and religious pilgrims each year. The twin-aisle A350-900 will provide elevated fuel efficiency, modern cabin amenities, and increased cargo hold capacity on these vital trunk routes. Meanwhile, the six A321neo aircraft will be deployed on regional services across South Asia and Southeast Asia, including flights to Delhi, Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.
Delivery Schedules and Fleet Planning
Under the baseline agreement, deliveries of the 10 Airbus aircraft are scheduled to begin in phases starting in 2033, extending through the middle of the next decade. However, Bangladeshi aviation officials, including Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, have urged Airbus to accelerate deliveries to bring forward the first handovers prior to 2030, citing urgent capacity requirements at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The Commercial and Engineering View
From an airline economics perspective, the A350-900 and A321neo pairing provides substantial operating efficiencies. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the A350-900 burns up to 25 percent less fuel compared to previous-generation widebodies while offering superior dispatch reliability. For short- and medium-haul segments, the A321neo offers industry-leading seat-mile economics and reduced carbon emissions.
The integration of Airbus types will require Biman to invest in dual pilot type ratings, flight simulation devices, and dedicated line maintenance capabilities in Dhaka. However, by modernising its fleet with the latest aerostructures and propulsion technology, Biman positions itself to capture higher market share against aggressive competition from Gulf super-connectors and regional Asian competitors.
